The appeal of year round sunshine and affordable lifestyle is making more and more families choose Koh Phangan as their permanent home, or a home for 6 months or so to escape their Western winter.
Whereas once there were only a small number of children being schooled in Koh Phangan, there is a growing community of international families resident on the island.
Si Panya school is an international school for children from ages 5-13. The school is soon moving to a purpose built school which is on bigger premises to accommodate the quickly expanding student numbers. For the first year ever, Si Panya will be offering a year 7 class (the equivalent of secondary school in the UK). Si Panya follows the English school curriculum. There are a whole host of after school clubs on offer for the children from martial arts and Thai dancing to art club and IT lessons.
The Learning Tree is a very popular private nursery and Kindergarten based near Thongsala for children aged 2-7. Set up in 2008, the nursery also had to move to larger purpose built premises to accommodate the swelling numbers. In addition to Thai and English which all children learn, there are a whole host of activities including drama, sport, music and art. The Learning Tree has a large private garden which the children enjoy playing in.
For those families wishing to relocate to Koh Phangan, there are still some great real estate opportunities. Some families choose to live near the school for the convenience of the facilities Thongsala has to offer whilst others go further afield in the West for the sunset views. Luxury villas with private pools, or bungalows with sea views are surprisingly affordable when compared to what real estate you would be able to get on the same budget in your home country.
